Chapter 51

Wynter

Three Days Later

I stared out the window as we approached the Houston airport.

As the tops of the trees came into view, I blew out a breath.

We were almost home.

But coming home was feeling a whole different this time than it had the last time I’d flown in.

Last time I’d had the unexpected surprise of a new driver who wasn’t actually a driver.

But right now Cooper was in Alabama getting ready to fly Momma home.

Grandmamma had been released from the hospital yesterday.

Everyone, including Grandmamma, thought she was having a heart attack. Instead she had something called costochondritis. Some kind of painful arthritis in the chest.

The doctors had sent her home with orders to get lots of rest. I’m pretty sure Momma would have stayed with her longer, but Momma had patients. The longer she was away, the more difficult it was to reschedule and catch up.

Momma had hired around the clock caregivers to help with things around the house.

Grandmamma wasn’t going to like not doing things for herself.

As the plane started its final descent, the freeway beneath us, I thought about flying out to visit my grandmother. It was the right thing to do.

I sighed. I had another job starting Friday, so I only had a couple of days to get ready for the next trip. A day spent flying to Alabama and back hadn’t been in my plans.

As we taxied toward the runway, I saw Jeff waiting for me next to the car.

Jeff was a good man and I felt bad for being disappointed that he was the one driving me today. He was one of the best drivers.

He just wasn’t Cooper.

The last three days had been trying in a number of ways. I’d been on pins and needles worrying about Grandmamma. And, although I understood why Daddy had wanted Cooper to be the one to fly Momma out to Alabama, I hadn’t been able to get him off my mind.

His kiss had kept me awake at night. And distracted during the day.

My plan to get him out of my system by sleeping with him had gone sideways. First of all, he’d slowed me down. And I’d been too besotted with his kisses to complain.

So since I hadn’t slept with him… Did having an orgasm count? If it did, my plan had most definitely backfired.

Maybe it was a good thing I hadn’t actually slept with him.

The plane came to a stop in front of the Skye Travels building.

I sighed and leaned back against the seat as the pilot secured the plane for deplaning.

Cooper had said I was trouble. But from my perspective, he was the one causing trouble.

Because of him, I’d broken my first rule: Never crush on a pilot. My second rule: Never kiss a pilot.

Now I couldn’t get him out of my mind. And I definitely wanted to kiss him again.

In fact, he was all I could think about.

A couple of minutes later, I unbuckled and went to the stairs leading to the tarmac.

I froze just as went to take the first step down.
